What is Plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that can cause pain in your heel and along the bottom of your foot. occurs when the band of tissue supporting your foot (plantar fascia) become irritated or overloaded.This can lead to pain, especially when walking, or following periods of inactivity. The pain is also often worse first thing in the morning.
There are many other causes of foot and heel pain and your Physiotherapist will be able to give you a full diagnosis.
Common symptoms
Some common symptoms of Plantar fasciitis you might be experiencing:
- Heel pain – especially on initial steps in the morning
- Pain worsened following periods of rest
- Discomfort when walking or standing
- Pain improved by movement, which returns later
- Tightness in the sole of your foot/calf
Common causes
These are some common causes of plantar fasciitis:
- Overuse – from walking, running or standing for long periods
- Changes in training – an increase in training load can overload the plantar fascia
- Tight/weak calf muscles
- Inappropriate footwear
- Weakness in the smaller muscles in your foot
